About the Decanter World Wine Awards

The world’s “largest and most influential wine competition,” the 2021 Decanter World Wine Awards just released their results, having judged 18,094 wines from 56 countries. The judges constituted a panel of 170 experts, including 44 Masters of Wine and 11 Master Sommeliers.

We Won Silver

We are incredibly proud of the quality and care that we put into our wines, and it is always gratifying to have our dedication to innovation and attention to detail rewarded. Monte Creek Winery was awarded 90 points and a Silver medal for both our 2019 Riesling and our, not yet released, 2019 Ancient Waters Chardonnay.

Scoring

Don’t worry if you aren’t familiar with the 100-point scale for scoring wine. Unless you’re really into reading wine reviews, you probably wouldn’t know about it. Counter-intuitively, the scale does not actually start at 0, but rather 50. After that, the higher the score the better. Wine Spectator categorizes point scores accordingly:

  • 95-100: Classic: a great wine
  • 90-94: Outstanding: a wine of superior character and style
  • 85-89: Very good: a wine with special qualities
  • 80-84: Good: a solid, well-made wine
  • 75-79: Mediocre: a drinkable wine that may have minor flaws
  • 50-74: Not recommended
